Happiness Four Letter Word

HAPPINESS IS A FOUR-LETTER WORD

With Mmabatho Montsho, Renata Stuurman, Khanyi Mbau, Chris Attoh, Richard Lukunku, Stevel Marc, Emmanuel Castis

Written by Busisiwe Ntintili
Directed by Thabang Moleya

Happiness Is A Four-Letter Word threads a well-worn theme. The Sex And The City template is blatantly obvious - but here the three girlfriends are one short of Carey Bradshaw and her gang's foursome. They love fashion, try their best to dodge life's pitfalls, and navigate the importance (and irrelevance) of how men play into all of it with their relationships - from the workplace to romance and long term goals. One of them is having an affair, another on the verge of getting married (after being promoted at her law firm). Sex and issues are central, some of the obstacle they need to overcome including their professional lives (and separating it from their private lives), choice of suitors, not wanting to commit, desiring freedom but also security... But, shoes, lingerie, casual affairs, flings, infidelity and loyalty is not left out in the cold.

Naturally wedged into the South African milieu, it is a good start to try and get away from the local soap opera tropes and reflecting SA adult situations beyond the lame TV story lines.
Sure, this isn't perfect, but certainly commendable.
